Tuire Nikkanen and Elmeri Siltaloppi live in Tampere with their two children. In the summer, they have always spent a lot of time at Elmer’s parents’ summer cottage, which is located on the shore of a lake in Teisko, about a 25-minute drive from their home in Tampere. However, Elmeri and Tuire had long dreamed of having their own holiday home, where they could spend time in more ways than just the summer.

Naturally, Elmeri wanted to keep his parents’ property in the family, but the cottage built in the 1950s did not meet Tuire and Elmer’s wishes for a holiday home. They considered many options, such as selling or renovating the old cottage, as well as building a new one in its place. Of these options, they ended up with the latter and Elmeri bought the property from his parents. An 88 m² log cabin was chosen as the new holiday home, which was ordered as a “shelter in the weather” package. The new cottage would easily accommodate their entire family of four and their pet dog.

The first criterion for the construction project was that the building be made habitable in the winter, so that quality time with the family could be spent there all year round. “Previously, we used to go to my parents’ place to hang out, but the old cottage was always cold in the winter. We wanted this to be a place where we could really spend time.”

The starting point for the new holiday home was to find solutions that were as simple as possible. “We didn’t want another construction site on the site, so now that it’s finished, it would be nice if we could just go there and relax.” Energy efficiency and simplicity are brought about by, for example, the geothermal heating system chosen as the heating method, the Biopurifier 3 product chosen as the wastewater system, and the closed tank for toilet water.

They decided on Vestell based on good experiences from acquaintances. “We heard from others that this is a good and reliable solution and we trusted Vestell’s professionals.” A few quality aspects, such as the longevity and ease of maintenance of the Biopurifier, were decisive features for Tuire and Elmer in their choice. “The installation of the wastewater system was handled by a local contractor. I didn’t do anything about it myself, the solution was ready for use when I arrived at the site.”

They have been living in their vacation home since June and the device has worked as promised. “Power from the wall and thumbs up. That’s all.”

Although everything went well for Biopuhsitja, Elmeri urges you to invest in planning and to reserve extra time for the project. “We had everything planned well, and yet changes happened. Fortunately, we were able to influence things while the project was still in progress, for example, adding one toilet. So it’s worth planning even better than well.”

Tuire and Elmeri started designing the cottage in spring 2019 and the permit process started in the summer. The old cottage was demolished after the summer season and the new building was granted a building permit in November. The new holiday home was completed in June 2020. “The idea was that no summer would be wasted and we succeeded in that. We spent the previous summer in the old cottage and the new one was ready for this summer. Now we can just enjoy it when everything is in order.”
