Clean water is the lifeblood of life and the world’s most important natural resource. In Finland, the situation in terms of the adequacy and quality of drinking water is good, although the hot and dry summer last year already caused problems in several municipalities. We must take care of our water resources and prevent their pollution. This also essentially involves the treatment of wastewater.

Residential wastewater contains a high amount of nutrients, oxygen-consuming organic matter and intestinal bacteria. The concentration of phosphorus in untreated wastewater is over a thousand times higher and nitrogen is over a hundred times higher than in natural waters. Even small amounts of wastewater have a strong eutrophication effect when it enters a water body. Eutrophication is seen as an increase in algae production and ultimately as cyanobacterial blooms.

Organic matter, together with the nitrogen contained in wastewater, consumes oxygen. If dilution is weak, water bodies become anoxic and smelly. The amount of organic matter must therefore be reduced before wastewater is discharged into nature. The best way to reduce organic matter is to mechanically oxidize it in the wastewater system.

The human digestive tract and especially feces contain a large number of different bacteria, viruses and protozoa, many of which are also pathogens – and they are transferred directly to the toilet water. Most of these bacteria and viruses cause diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain, but also more serious illnesses and even deaths. Wastewater constitutes an undeniable hygienic health risk, especially for your own well and the beach. The absolute best way to avoid health risks is to separate toilet water from other household water in a closed tank. At the same time, most of the harmful nitrogen and phosphorus contained in the wastewater is also removed.
