Johanna and Sauli wanted a home for their family of four outside the suburbs and the city center. About three years ago, they found a perfect forested plot with an idyllic rural landscape in Satakunta, a sparsely populated area. They were particularly fascinated by the differences in elevation and the rocky terrain of the plot. It was clear to Johanna and Saul from the very beginning that they wanted to make all the building solutions as ecologically and nature-friendly as possible.

The couple designed the 148m² log house together with the building architect of the house supplier. The most important criteria for the construction were, among others, plastic-free, energy-friendly and the most ecological material choices. “We wanted it to be good for us to be here, and for the environment to remain as untouched as possible.”

Johanna and Sauli bought the plot in the fall of 2020 and spent the first few months sorting out permit issues. The building permit was granted the following year in January, and the actual construction began in early spring 2021. First, trees were felled from the plot and clearing and blasting work was carried out. The earthworks were carried out by local contractors and the house was erected by a log house supplier on the principle of shelter from the weather. Sauli and Johanna were involved in all stages of the project from the beginning and after the house was delivered, they, among other things, erected partition walls, made slabs and screeds, and did all the surfaces of the house themselves, except for the wet rooms. The house was completed after a year and a half of hard work in the summer of 2022 and the long-awaited moving permit was granted to the site in August.

The plot receives municipal water, but no sewerage network. So, a closed tank for toilet water and a filtration field for grey water were first designed for the property. “The main idea was that we didn’t want to burden the environment, and it was clear to us all the time that we didn’t want to release black water into nature.” The field solution also had to be quickly abandoned for grey water, because once work began, it became clear that an absorption field would be too difficult to implement due to the elevation differences on the plot and the challenging soil. Johanna and Sauli ended up searching for alternative solutions online and found the Vestelli Biopurifier 3 grey water purifier. “It was important to us that the grey water that we generate and that ends up in nature after treatment would not burden nature and the environment too much.”

The installation of the bio-purifier was done by a local ground contractor who had been involved in the construction project from the beginning. The Vestelli Bio-purifier 3 was a new product for the contractor, but with the help of clear installation instructions, the installation was efficiently completed in less than a day.

In retrospect, Sauli would have wished that the Biopurifier had been designed for the property right from the start. This would have saved time and resources. “If we had known about Vestell earlier, we would have installed the Biopurifier and the closed tank at the same time. So it’s worth finding out right from the start which options are best suited to your specific construction site. This solution suited us perfectly for this location. We immediately found a suitable hole for the Biopurifier on the plot and the distances were as planned – for the house, the Biopurifier and the demolition site.”
