The Barö Archipelago Hotel, completed in June, offers luxurious accommodation in the Inkoo archipelago in the Barösund area. The project began when the Inkoo municipality planned accommodation in the area to revitalize the municipality. Jussi Paavoseppä and Ossi-Matti Nieminen took up the challenge, purchased a plot of land and came up with the idea of a special archipelago hotel for the area.

The hotel has 12 rooms, each of which is its own building, or rather, its own accommodation unit. Here, the presence of the sea, refined architecture and personal service are combined. In addition, the property has a restaurant building and a beach sauna right by the sea, which is connected to an atmospheric fireplace room and an enjoyable hot tub. Seven more rooms are planned, as soon as the rush subsides.

The archipelago hotel offers its guests unique services and activities all year round. Almost everything you can imagine is organized here, from guided yoga to mountain biking to hunting trips.

The Barö’s identity is based on the archipelago and nature, so the entire construction project wanted to be carried out while preserving and respecting these. To support the preservation of nature, the construction project began with the construction of roads, paths and access bridges, after which the workers were instructed to walk only on the access roads, so that the rest of the nature would remain as untouched as possible.

Rocky sites often require excavation, but for the sake of nature, in Barö it was decided to leave the sewer lines above ground, under the footbridges that follow the rock. In addition, the hotel buildings were prefabricated in a factory and transported to the site as building units. This saved the environment from the disadvantages of normal construction, such as dust and noise. “The idea is that we are just here in the village and we want to respect this beautiful environment.”

This property has been meticulously designed and executed down to the last detail. All the lighting in the hotel was designed by Håkan Långstedt and is handmade in Hernesaari, Helsinki. “We have very dim lighting in the rooms, as we want nature to be as present as possible.”

In addition, all rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows facing the sea, which brings the feeling of the forest and the sea into the rooms. Investment has also been made in the exterior cladding of the buildings. The exterior cladding uses blackened wood, which creates a harmonious atmosphere for the area and is in harmony with the archipelago.

All of the building materials on the site are very natural. The buildings are made of chemical-free solid wood logs, the insulation is eco-wool, and the vapor barriers are paper.

In addition to preserving nature, it was important for the project that the hotel be as self-sufficient as possible. Therefore, the property’s electricity is produced with its own solar power, tap water comes from a borehole, and waste is treated in its own wastewater treatment plant. Even check-in and check-out are done online, and the rooms have mobile keys that work with your own phone.

The wastewater system was not a simple one, as the ELY Centre initially demanded that only dry toilets be installed. However, this did not fit the operating model of an idyllic archipelago hotel, so the hotel founders set out to explore alternative solutions.

Due to their good technical expertise and professionalism, they eventually decided to collaborate with Vestelli. The partnership with Vestelli led to the development of a new water management plan, and then the ELY Centre and the Inkoo municipality approved the Vestelli BioKube – a wastewater treatment system for all wastewater. The purification results of the BioKube are first-class and it meets the strictest environmental requirements. This resulted in a wastewater system for the site that supports the nature of the archipelago hotel.

Vestelli provided support throughout the project, from equipment selection and design to installation.
