What is the Wastewater Act?

The Wastewater Act can be summarized in three points:
- 1. The wastewater system must be renewed by October 31, 2019, if the building is located in a coastal area (maximum 100 m from a body of water or the sea) or in a groundwater area.
- 2. The wastewater system does not need to be renovated,
- if the building permit for the property was granted in 2004 or after.
- if the property is connected to the sewer network.
- if the property already has a wastewater system that meets the regulations.
- if all owners of the property were born before March 9, 1943.
- if the property only has piped water and a dry toilet (huussi).
- 3. The wastewater system must also be renewed in a situation where the building is not located in a coastal area (more than 100 m from a body of water or the sea) or in a groundwater area,
- if a permit is required for the construction of a water toilet or for repair and modification work on water and sewage systems, in which the system is renewed or completely repaired.
- if repair and alteration work that requires a building permit is carried out that is comparable to the construction of a building.
