Koivuranta holiday cottages, Antti Häkkinen: “The bio purifier takes up little space, is easy to install and is suitable for any location”, Mikkeli

Virpi and Antti Häkkinen rent out holiday cottages in Haukivuori, Mikkeli. They have a total of seven holiday homes for rent, all located in the peaceful nature of Lake Kyyvesi. The Koivuranta holiday cottages are well-equipped and suitable for both summer and winter use.

Holidaymakers are attracted by the magnificent traditional landscapes with their kyyttä and a comprehensive range of nature activities for every season. Kyyvesi offers great fishing opportunities and excellent mushroom and berry forests can be found near the cottages. At the Koivuranta farm, you can get to know the authentic rural life of South Savo.

Renewing the sewage system of one of the rental cottages, Kielo, became relevant when the cottage began to be expanded. Kielo had previously only been used in the summer and now it was wanted to be used in the winter. Previously, the cottage had only had running water, but during the renovation, toilet and shower facilities were added. Kielo now has enough capacity for five people. In the summer, it is fully booked and in the winter, it is used less. When it comes to the sewage system, it is therefore important that the system can withstand both continuous and occasional use.

The wastewater system selected was a Vestelli Biopurifier 3 for grey water and a closed tank for toilet water. The wastewater is therefore led through two pipes to different tanks. This solution is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to treat grey washing water and black water from toilet use.

Häkkinen was already familiar with the bio-purifier from the Kotkanpesä cottage renovated in 2015, and satisfaction with the device’s operation also determined the decision for Kielo. The plots in both sites are rocky, so a field solution, for example, would not have been possible.

The Häkki people took care of the installation of the Biopurifier themselves, as they have an excavator at their disposal. A hole was found on the rocky plot of Kotkanpesä that was just right for the Biopurifier, while the installation at Kielo involved filling in the ground. Kielo is located 20 meters from the shore and the Biopurifier was installed about five meters above the cottage. Grey water is led to the Biopurifier via a grey water pumping station. “The Biopurifier takes up little space, is easy to install and is suitable for any site,” says Antti.
