Sari and Juha’s dream of a holiday home came true when Sari received a wonderful wooded plot on the shores of Lake Oulujärvi, in the municipality of Vaala. A lovely log house from the Kontio collection was chosen as the holiday home, and it is designed for the couple to live in all year round. The property will also be used occasionally by the families of Sari and Juha’s children. The holiday home is sized so that 4-6 people can easily spend time there at a time.

The construction project began in the summer of 2021, when about 30 trees were felled on the site and in October, a construction contractor came to dig gravel beds. In the spring of 2022, another work crew came to lay the foundations, after which construction began. This was Juha’s second construction project and he believed he would get through this one more easily. “I thought I would get through it a little easier this time, but it didn’t quite work out that way,” he says with a laugh. “It’s all taken a surprisingly long time, but we’ve now spent several nights in the holiday home.”

It was clear to the couple from the start that the holiday home would have all the common amenities, such as an indoor toilet, shower, dishwasher and a reservation for a washing machine. This set certain requirements for the wastewater system. Juha began his search for equipment by first asking the municipality of Vaala how the wastewater system for the property should be implemented. The municipality recommended a closed tank for black water and a separate purifier for gray water. “I probably spent half a year looking at the options of many different companies for gray water purification and I also considered a batch treatment plant.”

Now we have taken on the responsibility ourselves.” When it comes to choosing a wastewater system, Juha recommends contacting the municipality’s building inspector and the person responsible for wastewater matters right from the start. “They will tell you what type of system to install, are impartial, and will guide you in complying with the municipality’s wastewater regulations. From there, it’s a good idea to continue your search for equipment.”
