A unique new development has been built on a rocky island in the Espoo archipelago, offering an unforgettable leisure spot amidst nature. This is a project completed this spring by Mikael and Susanna Winqvist. This 80m² + 40m² log house was designed by an architect and the building services and wastewater issues have been implemented in collaboration with Vestell.

The plot has been in the Winqvist family since 1951, so understandably the old cottage had reached the end of its life and it was time to completely renovate the place. The goal was to create a new holiday home that could accommodate the Winqvists, their children, their spouses and any future children. “The starting point is that the capacity should be enough to actually live there with a larger group and not have to worry about whether the water will be cleaned or the well will flood,” says Winqvist when asked about his criteria for the sewage system.

The construction project that began in 2021 was the Winqvists’ first, so there were challenges along the way. During the project, there were difficulties, especially with the Building Department. There was no existing plan for the area, so it was necessary to apply for a deviation permit before the actual building permit. The ELY Centre had also defined precise requirements for the wastewater system. After noticing that the originally planned treatment system did not meet these requirements, at the request of the designer, it was decided to choose Vestell’s Biopurifier 3 and a composting toilet for the property. This solution enabled sustainable and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment, and was approved by the ELY Centre.

“After a nine-month building ban and the granting of permits, the project progressed relatively painlessly to completion,” Winqvist recalls. The Biopurifier 3 was transported to the island by ferry and the installation went smoothly. The adjustment options for the inspection hatch and ventilation pipe provided the desired flexibility in placing the device. In the end, the Biopurifier was installed in the villa’s yard, 15 meters from the shore.

The holiday home, which was completed this spring, has just passed its final inspection. The finished villa is equipped with modern technology, such as an air-source heat pump, electricity brought to the island, a shower, and dishwashers and washing machines. These give the owners the full comforts of a detached house and offer an ideal environment for a break from everyday life.
